Chemical Bonding (Inorganic) — the complete deep dive

Three complementary models describe the same reality at rising levels of sophistication: VSEPR (predict shape from electron-pair repulsion), Valence Bond Theory (localised bonds, hybridisation, resonance), and Molecular Orbital Theory (delocalised orbitals — the only model that explains paramagnetic O₂, fractional bond.

0. How to use — three models, one molecule

Pick the model that answers the question asked:

QuestionBest modelWhy
What is the shape / bond angle?VSEPRfast, needs only steric number & lone pairs
Which orbitals, hybridisation, resonance?VBTlocalised bonds match Lewis intuition
Magnetism, bond order, spectra, why O₂ paramagnetic?MOTonly delocalised model gives unpaired e⁻ & fractional BO
Ionic vs covalent, lattice energy, solubility?Ionic model + Fajanselectrostatics + polarisation
Conductivity of a solid?Band theoryMO limit of an infinite lattice
The three questions for any species: (1) Steric number = (σ-bonds + lone pairs) on the central atom → VSEPR shape & hybridisation. (2) Total valence electrons → fill MOs → bond order & magnetism. (3) Δχ and ion charge/size → ionic vs covalent character. Answer these and you can predict shape, magnetism, and bond type without memorising individual molecules.
