Deep-Dive Guides · Kinetic Theory of Gases
Gases — kinetic theory, real gases & transport: the complete deep dive
One guide dense enough to take you from PV = nRT to CSIR-NET Part-C mastery. The organising idea: a gas is a statistical crowd of molecules.

0. The big idea — pressure and temperature from molecules
The ideal-gas law PV = nRT is an empirical summary of Boyle, Charles and Avogadro. Kinetic theory derives it from four postulates about molecules, and — more importantly — tells you what P and T are:
| Quantity | Kinetic-theory meaning |
|---|---|
| Pressure P | time-averaged momentum delivered to the walls per unit area per unit time |
| Temperature T | a direct measure of ⟨½mu²⟩ (mean translational KE): ⟨ε⟩ = (3/2)kBT |
| Internal energy (monatomic) | U = (3/2)nRT (only translation) |
