Statistical Thermodynamics — the complete deep dive

The bridge from molecular energy levels to bulk thermodynamics. The organising idea: one object — the partition function q (and its system-level cousin Q) — encodes how molecules spread over their quantum states, and every thermodynamic property (U, S, CV, A, p, even K) is a derivative of ln Q.

0. How to use this guide — the micro→macro map

Classical thermodynamics tells you that S exists; statistical thermodynamics tells you what it is — a count of molecular arrangements. The entire subject is one chain of logic:

energy levels εi → partition function q → ln Q → U, S, A, p, CV, K the central chain
ObjectWhat it isAnswers the question
εi, giquantum energy levels & degeneracies (from spectroscopy / models)where can a molecule put its energy?
q = Σ gi e−εi/kTmolecular partition functionhow many states are thermally accessible?
Qcanonical (system) partition function = qN/N! (indep., indistinguishable)how do N molecules share the states?
ln Qthe generating functiondifferentiate it to get everything
The two master results that unlock all of thermodynamics: Boltzmann's entropyS = k ln W (W = number of microstates for the observed macrostate) and the Boltzmann distributionni/N = gie−εi/kT/q. The first says entropy is disorder counted; the second says how molecules populate levels at temperature T. Everything else is calculus applied to these.
The three questions to ask of any stat-mech problem: (1) What are the accessible energy levels and their degeneracies? (2) Is the energy gap large or small compared with kT? (gap ≪ kT ⇒ many states populated, classical/equipartition limit; gap ≫ kT ⇒ frozen in the ground state). (3) Distinguishable (localised, e.g. a crystal) or indistinguishable (a gas)? — this decides whether you use Q = qN or qN/N!. Answer these three and the machine runs.
