What CSIR-NET Chemical Sciences is
CSIR-NET (Chemical Sciences) is a national-level eligibility test conducted on behalf of CSIR-HRDG for two awards: Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), which funds PhD research, and Lectureship / Assistant Professor eligibility. Both are decided from the same single objective paper — your rank determines which award you qualify for. It is one of the most competitive science exams in India, so a clear strategy matters as much as raw knowledge.
Exam pattern and marking
The paper is a single three-hour computer-based test worth 200 marks, divided into three parts. You see more questions than you are allowed to answer, so choosing what to attempt is part of the skill.
- Part A — General Aptitude: 20 questions, attempt any 15. Logical reasoning, numerical ability, data interpretation and graphical analysis. Each correct answer is 2 marks; each wrong answer loses 0.5 (25% negative marking).
- Part B — Core Chemical Sciences: around 40 questions, attempt 35. Conceptual MCQs across Physical, Organic and Inorganic chemistry. 2 marks each, −0.5 for a wrong answer.
- Part C — Advanced Chemical Sciences: around 60 questions, attempt 25. Higher-order, application and problem-solving questions. Each is worth 4 marks with a −1 penalty for a wrong answer.

Syllabus overview
The syllabus spans the three classical branches of chemistry. You do not need exotic topics — you need genuine depth in the core.
Physical Chemistry
Quantum chemistry, group theory and molecular symmetry, spectroscopy (rotational, vibrational, electronic, NMR, ESR), thermodynamics and statistical thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, electrochemistry, surface chemistry and solid state. Physical chemistry rewards problem practice more than any other section.
Organic Chemistry
Reaction mechanisms and reactive intermediates, stereochemistry, named reactions and reagents, pericyclic and photochemistry, aromaticity and heterocycles, natural products, and structure determination by spectroscopy (UV, IR, NMR, MS).
Inorganic Chemistry
Periodic properties and bonding, coordination chemistry (CFT/LFT, spectra, magnetism), organometallics and catalysis, main-group and transition/inner-transition elements, bioinorganic and nuclear chemistry, and analytical methods.

A realistic study plan
Most successful candidates work in clear phases rather than reading everything at once. A workable shape for a serious 5–6 month run:
- Foundation (months 1–2): Rebuild concepts branch by branch from one standard text per topic. Make a one-page summary for every unit as you go — these become your revision spine.
- Problem phase (months 3–4): Shift from reading to solving. Work topic-wise question sets, then begin Part-C-style problems. Track which sub-topics cost you marks.
- Mock phase (months 5–6): Take full-length, timed mocks weekly under real conditions, then spend more time analysing each mock than you spent taking it. Revise from your summaries, not the textbooks.
Pick two of the three branches as your strengths and aim to score heavily there in Part C, while keeping the third strong enough to clear Part B. Trying to be equally elite in all three is how most people run out of time.
How to use previous-year questions and mocks
Previous-year questions (PYQs) are the single best signal of what the exam actually expects. Use them to learn the style and depth of questioning, not to memorise answers. After each PYQ set, classify every question by topic and by why you got it wrong — concept gap, calculation slip, or misread. Patterns in those errors tell you exactly what to fix.
Timed mocks train a different muscle: performing under a clock with negative marking. They build the temperament to skip a trap, manage your 180 minutes, and decide attempts on the fly. Treat each mock review as a study session in itself.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Endless reading, little solving. You learn chemistry by working problems, not by re-highlighting notes.
- Ignoring Part A. Aptitude is fast, low-risk marks — practise it for a few minutes daily instead of treating it as an afterthought.
- Over-attempting Part C. The −1 penalty punishes guessing. Attempt only what you can reason out.
- Skipping mock analysis. Taking a mock and not dissecting it wastes most of its value.
- Chasing every resource. One good text per topic plus heavy problem practice beats ten half-read books.
