Why Part C is decisive
Two candidates can know the same chemistry and finish with very different ranks — and the gap almost always opens up in Part C. Each Part C question is worth 4 marks with a −1 penalty, and you attempt 25 of around 60. That makes Part C the single largest block of marks in the paper and the most volatile: get a handful more right than your competitor and you jump hundreds of ranks; over-attempt and the penalty drags you back. Part A and B largely separate the qualified from the unqualified; Part C separates the JRF-rank candidates from the rest.
What Part C questions look like
Part C is "advanced chemical science" — it does not test recall, it tests whether you can use concepts. Common formats include:
- Multi-step numericals: kinetics rate-law derivations, thermodynamic state calculations, quantum/spectroscopy problems where one slip propagates to the wrong option.
- Mechanism and product prediction: organic transformations, stereochemical outcomes, and reasoning about the major product or intermediate.
- Match-the-following and assertion-reason: linking structures, spectra, or properties — often with one tempting distractor.
- Application of a principle to a new case: e.g. predicting magnetic behaviour, geometry from CFT/LFT, or interpreting an NMR/IR pattern you haven't seen before.
- Statement-based questions: "which of the following are correct" framed as single-correct, where you must verify several claims to answer one.
A reliable problem-solving approach
Under time pressure, a repeatable routine beats improvisation. For each Part C question:
- Read for the actual ask. Part C questions are wordy by design. Identify exactly what's wanted — major product, rate constant, correct statement set — before touching the options.
- Decide in 10–15 seconds: solve, eliminate, or skip. If it's in your strong area and the route is clear, solve. If you can knock out options by a quick principle, eliminate. If neither, flag and move on — do not sink three minutes into one item.
- Work toward the answer, not from the options. Derive or reason first, then match to an option. Reading the options first invites you to rationalise a distractor.
- Use elimination as a tool, not a crutch. Ruling out two options on solid grounds turns a guess into a positive-expected-value attempt (see the maths in our marking-scheme guide). Ruling out none means you skip.
- Sanity-check numericals. Check units, orders of magnitude and sign. Part C distractors are frequently the answer you'd get from one specific, common mistake.
Time management in Part C
With roughly 90–100 minutes for Part C and 25 attempts to make from ~60 questions, aim for an average near three minutes per attempted question, but spend it unevenly — fast on sure-shots, more on the ones genuinely worth the time.
- Work in passes. First pass: answer only certainties and flag the rest. Second pass: return to flagged questions where you can eliminate. This stops you from burning early minutes on a hard item and missing easy marks later.
- Cap your losses on any single question. If you're not converging after ~2 minutes, flag and move. There are always more reachable marks elsewhere.
- Stop at 25 quality attempts. Don't pad attempts just to fill the cap — a forced 26th answer can only hurt.
- Reserve a few minutes to review flags, not to second-guess answers you reasoned out cleanly.
How to build Part C ability before the exam
Part C performance is trained, not improvised. Solve previous-year Part C questions topic by topic until the common problem patterns feel familiar, then move to full-length timed mocks so the triage decisions become reflexes. After every mock, re-attempt the Part C questions you skipped or missed and write down why — that error log is the fastest route to more conversions next time.
