How to think about books for CSIR-NET
The biggest mistake aspirants make is collecting books. CSIR-NET Chemical Sciences does not reward owning ten texts per subject; it rewards genuine depth in a few. The titles below are the standard, widely recommended references that working chemists and successful candidates return to again and again. Treat this as a menu, not a shopping list: pick one primary text per topic, use the others only to clarify a specific concept, and spend the rest of your time on problems and revision. These are reference suggestions only — none are official or required, and the official CSIR-HRDG syllabus is always the final authority on scope.
Physical Chemistry
Physical chemistry is the most problem-driven section, so your text should be one you can solve alongside.
- Atkins' Physical Chemistry (Atkins & de Paula) — the broad backbone for thermodynamics, kinetics, electrochemistry and spectroscopy.
- Quantum Chemistry (Donald McQuarrie) — clear, rigorous treatment of quantum mechanics and its chemical applications.
- Molecular Quantum Mechanics (Atkins & Friedman) — a step deeper for the advanced quantum and group-theory questions in Part C.
- Physical Chemistry (Levine) — a strong alternative when you want a different explanation of the same topic.
Organic Chemistry
Organic chemistry rewards understanding mechanisms over memorising reactions, so favour texts that reason from first principles.
- Organic Chemistry (Clayden, Greeves & Warren) — the gold-standard mechanistic text; outstanding for building intuition.
- Advanced Organic Chemistry (Jerry March / March's, by Smith) — the comprehensive reference for reactions, mechanisms and structure.
- Stereochemistry of Organic Compounds (Eliel & Wilen) — the definitive treatment of a topic CSIR-NET tests heavily.
- Introduction to Spectroscopy (Pavia, Lampman, Kriz & Vyvyan) — the standard for IR, NMR, UV and MS structure determination.
- Strategic Applications of Named Reactions (Kürti & Czakó) — a focused companion for named reactions and synthetic logic.
Inorganic Chemistry
Inorganic chemistry spans bonding, coordination, organometallics and main-group descriptive chemistry, so a couple of complementary texts help.
- Inorganic Chemistry (Shriver & Atkins) — the standard modern text covering bonding, periodicity and coordination chemistry.
- Inorganic Chemistry (Miessler, Fischer & Tarr) — particularly clear on symmetry, group theory and organometallics.
- Concepts and Models of Inorganic Chemistry (Douglas, McDaniel & Alexander) — strong on bonding theories and coordination chemistry.
- Chemistry of the Elements (Greenwood & Earnshaw) — an exhaustive reference for descriptive main-group chemistry when you need detail.
General aptitude and practice resources
Part A (General Aptitude) rarely needs a chemistry text — a standard quantitative-aptitude and reasoning book, plus daily short practice, is enough. The most valuable "resource" for Part B and Part C is not another textbook at all: it is previous-year questions and timed mocks. How to actually use these books
- One primary text per topic. Read it properly; use the others only to unstick a specific concept.
- Make summaries as you read. A one-page note per unit becomes your revision spine — you will revise from these, not the books.
- Solve alongside reading. Especially in physical chemistry, do problems the same day you study a topic.
- Map everything to the syllabus. Check each chapter against the official scope so you do not over-study off-syllabus detail.
- Finish with PYQs and mocks. No book substitutes for practising real-format questions under time.
