PGT Chemistry (Post-Graduate Teacher)

PGT Chemistry posts are senior-secondary teaching roles in government and government-aided schools, recruited by bodies such as KVS, NVS, and various state and central commissions.

Eligibility

Typically a master's degree in Chemistry with the prescribed minimum marks, plus a B.Ed qualification. Some recruiters also require a relevant teaching-eligibility test. Age limits and relaxations follow the recruiter's norms.

Selection and exam

Selection usually combines a written exam with an interview or demonstration lesson. The written paper covers your chemistry subject knowledge, teaching aptitude and pedagogy, general awareness, and reasoning. Subject depth here closely mirrors the kind of conceptual chemistry tested in eligibility exams, so a strong core is the best foundation.

Drug Inspector

Drug Inspectors enforce pharmaceutical regulations — inspecting manufacturing and sales, drawing samples, and ensuring products meet legal standards. Recruitment is conducted by UPSC, state public service commissions and similar bodies.

Eligibility

Eligibility commonly centres on a degree in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences, though some notifications also accept chemistry-related degrees with the right specialisation — read each notification carefully, as criteria differ by recruiter.

Selection and exam

The process typically involves a written examination, sometimes followed by an interview and document verification. The written test emphasises pharmaceutical chemistry, analytical methods, drug laws and quality control, so analytical and inorganic strengths pay off here.

Lab / Analytical Chemist

Laboratory and analytical chemist roles exist across testing labs, forensic science laboratories, pollution-control boards, food and water testing agencies, and PSU quality-control units.

Eligibility

Usually a bachelor's or master's degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or a related discipline. Entry-level posts often sit at Pay Level 6–7 depending on the post and organisation.

Selection and exam

Selection generally runs in stages: a written examination, then a skill or practical laboratory test where applicable, followed by an interview and document verification. The written paper leans heavily on analytical and instrumental chemistry — titrations, spectroscopy, chromatography, and quantitative methods — alongside the core branches.

A study plan that works across roles

The good news is that the chemistry core overlaps heavily across all three paths, so you can build one foundation and specialise late:

  1. Build the core (months 1–2): Strengthen Physical, Organic and Inorganic chemistry from one standard text per topic, with extra weight on analytical and instrumental methods.
  2. Specialise (months 3–4): Add the role-specific layer — pedagogy for PGT, drug laws and pharmaceutical analysis for Drug Inspector, or analytical depth for Lab Chemist.
  3. Practice and mocks (ongoing): Drill MCQs and take full-length, timed mocks, then analyse every mistake by cause.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying without reading eligibility closely. Degree and specialisation requirements differ sharply between roles.
  • Neglecting analytical chemistry. It is decisive for lab and inspector roles and often under-prepared.
  • Ignoring the non-chemistry sections. Reasoning, aptitude and general awareness carry real marks.
  • Studying without timed practice. Speed and accuracy under a clock are what selection actually measures.
